MT4/MT5 Guide

Common MT4/MT5 Errors and How to Troubleshoot Them

This practical guide helps users organize MetaTrader login, server-selection, platform, chart and connection problems before requesting technical support.

Each issue includes clear checks, useful details to record and guidance on when the problem should be escalated to a broker, platform provider or technical team.

Quick troubleshooting table

Use this table as a first filter. The same symptom can have several causes, so treat each row as a starting point, not a diagnosis. Exact behaviour can vary between brokers, account types and platform builds.

Individual errors explained

Common MetaTrader errors with practical first checks, likely causes and clear escalation guidance.

MT4/MT5 "No Connection"

The status bar shows "No Connection" when the terminal cannot reach the trading server. Users typically still see the interface, but prices stop updating and orders cannot be sent.

Practical checks: confirm the internet works in other apps; check whether the login used real or demo credentials against the correct server; verify the server address in the terminal login window; confirm whether other accounts or devices can connect; check whether a firewall, VPN or corporate network blocks the terminal; try restarting the platform and, if offered, updating to the current build.

Escalate to the broker when the connection fails only for their server, when the server cannot be found in the list, or when other users report the same outage at the same time.

Invalid Account

"Invalid Account" normally means the credentials or the selected server do not match an existing account. Typical causes include a mistyped login number, an incorrect password, selecting the wrong broker server, or an account that has been archived, expired or disabled by the broker.

Check the login number for transposed digits, confirm the password in the broker's client portal if available, and make sure the server shown in the login window matches the server stated by the broker for that account. Where a broker operates demo, live or institutional environments, the account usually exists on only one of them.

If the credentials are confirmed correct, escalate to the broker to verify the account state.

Authorization Failed

MT5 in particular reports "Authorization failed" when credentials are rejected during the connection attempt. Unlike a generic "No Connection", this message indicates the server was reached but the login was refused.

Check the password, confirm the server, and verify investor versus master password usage where applicable, since the read-only password behaves differently. Repeated failures after a correct password should be escalated to the broker, including the exact message and a screenshot.

Trade Disabled

"Trade disabled" or a greyed-out trade button means trading is not currently permitted for that account or symbol. Possible reasons include account-level restrictions set by the broker, restrictions on the specific instrument, the account type, temporary broker-side changes or market conditions. Because causes vary, no single explanation applies universally.

Check whether other symbols can be traded, whether the account recently changed status, and whether the broker announced any changes. The broker ultimately confirms and resolves account or symbol permission questions.

Market Closed

"Market closed" appears when an order is attempted outside the trading session of the selected symbol. Sessions differ by instrument: many FX pairs pause over the weekend, indices and commodities follow their underlying exchange hours, and crypto instruments may follow broker-specific schedules.

Check the Market Watch session times for the symbol, confirm the broker's trading schedule including holiday arrangements, and simply retry during the session. No local fix exists for a genuinely closed market.

Off Quotes

"Off quotes" generally means no acceptable price was available when the request reached the server, commonly during fast markets, low liquidity or wide spreads. It is a market-condition message rather than an account fault.

Practical response: retry after a short pause, confirm the symbol is actively quoting, and review any maximum deviation settings. Persistent occurrences on quiet symbols should be discussed with the broker.

Invalid Stops

"Invalid stops" means the stop loss or take profit values do not satisfy the requirements of the symbol. Each instrument defines minimum stop distance requirements, and price movement can make a previously valid level invalid.

Check the stop levels against the symbol specification in Market Watch, keep required distance from the current price, and remember exact requirements vary by broker and instrument, so confirm specifics with the broker rather than relying on generic values.

Not Enough Money

"Not enough money" means free margin cannot cover the requested position size. Relevant factors include available margin, trade volume, leverage and account conditions, and margin already consumed by open positions.

This is educational troubleshooting, not trading advice: reducing volume, closing other positions or reviewing account conditions are the standard checks. Decisions about trades remain entirely with the account holder.

Waiting for Update

"Waiting for update" typically appears right after login while the terminal loads account and price data. On first login of a fresh installation it can legitimately take a while.

If it persists: check the connection state, switch the chart to an active symbol and timeframe, refresh charts, or restart the terminal. Persistent hangs should be escalated to the broker with the account, server and device details.

Common Error

MT4's generic "Common error" message conveys almost nothing on its own and requires context. Open the Journal and Experts tabs in the terminal to capture the surrounding log lines, including timestamps.

The exact log sequence, platform build, broker, server and what preceded the error are what a support team needs. Without them, even experienced reviewers can only guess.

Wrong Broker Server

Many connection and login failures trace back to a wrong server selection. Brokers often operate many servers, and a valid account on one server will fail on another.

Find the correct server in the broker's welcome email or client portal, use the server search field in the login dialog, and add the exact server if it is not listed. If the server does not exist in the terminal list, request the current server details from the broker, since these change over time.

Charts Not Loading or Updating

Chart problems usually come from the data feed or the terminal display. Check that the connection is active, that the symbol exists and is enabled in Market Watch, and that the timeframe has data.

Try refreshing or reopening the chart, switching timeframes, restarting the platform, or checking for a pending platform update. If charts freeze for all symbols while the connection shows as active, escalate to the broker.

Expert Advisor Not Working

For EAs that do not trade, check the non-programming basics first: the EA is attached to the intended chart with a smiley or enabled badge, the terminal's AutoTrading (Algo Trading) button is enabled, and the EA's own settings allow trading for the symbol and direction.

Review the Experts and Journal logs for the reason the EA declined to act, confirm the EA is compatible with the platform build, and check whether broker-side automated trading permissions apply. Do not attempt to bypass broker or platform controls.

Indicators Not Working

Indicators that do not appear usually have an installation or compatibility cause. Confirm the file went into the correct Indicators folder for the terminal in use, restart or refresh the chart after installation, and verify the indicator matches the platform version.

Check the terminal logs for load errors, remove outdated duplicate files, and re-download the indicator from its original source if the file may be corrupted.

MT4/MT5 Mobile Login Problems

On mobile, login issues most often combine the account-level causes above with app-specific factors: an outdated app version, a saved password that changed, an account configured only for desktop servers, or device keyboard autocorrect altering credentials.

Update the app, re-enter the login and password manually, select the broker server deliberately rather than accepting the default, and confirm the broker supports mobile access for the account type. If login works on desktop but never on mobile, ask the broker to confirm the correct mobile server details.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the most common MetaTrader questions.

Why does MT4 say "No Connection"?

Because the terminal cannot reach the broker server. Work through internet connectivity, server selection, login state, firewall or VPN interference, and platform updates before escalating to the broker.

Why does my MT5 account show "Invalid Account"?

Usually a mismatch between login credentials and the selected server, or an account state change such as expiry or archiving. Verify the login number, password and server, then confirm the account state with the broker.

Why can I log in but not trade?

Common causes include "Trade disabled" permissions, a closed market for the symbol, insufficient margin, or symbol-level restrictions. Each has its own checks described above, and several can only be confirmed by the broker.

How do I find the correct MT4/MT5 broker server?

Check the broker's welcome email or client portal, or ask their support. Use the server search in the login dialog and add the exact server if it is missing. Server lists change, so prefer current broker-provided details.

Why are my MetaTrader charts not updating?

Typically the data feed, the selected symbol or the terminal display. Check the connection state, symbol availability in Market Watch, timeframe data, chart refresh and platform updates before escalating.

When should I contact my broker?

When credentials are confirmed correct but rejected, when their server cannot be reached by anyone, when permissions or account state need confirmation, or when symbol behaviour differs from the documented conditions.

Is an MT4/MT5 problem always caused by MetaTrader?

No. The platform reports errors that can originate from local devices and networks, account configuration, broker infrastructure, market conditions or third-party products. The log context determines the actual owner.

Where do I find MT4/MT5 log files?

In the desktop terminal, open the Toolbox and check the Journal and Experts tabs for entries around the time of the issue. When escalating, share the exact log lines rather than screenshots alone.

Common issue categories

MetaTrader problems often look similar to users, but the cause may sit in a different layer: credentials, server selection, account status, internet connection, platform settings or broker-side configuration.

  • Incorrect login ID, password or investor password
  • Wrong trading server selected during login
  • Account not enabled, archived or restricted
  • Unstable connection or firewall limitation
  • Outdated desktop or mobile platform version
  • Indicator, Expert Advisor or chart configuration issue

How support teams should document common MetaTrader errors

Common MT4 and MT5 problems should be documented with the platform version, device, server name, account type, exact error message, time of issue, screenshot evidence and steps already tested.

This guide helps support teams handle MetaTrader questions more clearly. Some problems require broker-side, MetaQuotes-side, hosting-provider or developer review, so escalation context matters.
